Avoid 15 Smoking Risks By Quitting Smoking Smoking causes various health hazards. Prominent among them are lung cancers, heart related diseases and emphysema. However, there are a lot many other smoking risks caused by smoking which are not commonly known to many people. They are: 1. Lung cancer Lung cancer is the most common disease caused due to smoking. Smokers have a 20% or more probability of having lung cancer than non-smokers. Around 1.3 million smokers lose their lives to this disease every year. 2. Emphysema This is an extremely scary disease that makes lungs loose elasticity. This affects the amount of air brought into the body and is usually irreversible and cannot be cured. Almost 90% of emphysema is caused by smoking cigarettes and tobacco. 3. Asthma Here, breathing is made difficult due to constriction of airways in the lungs, when additional mucus is formed due to reactions that occur when irritants enter the body through the air. Tobacco particles in smoke vapors cause asthma. Many deaths are caused due to it. 4. Addiction Nicotine, according to professional health experts, is difficult to cut off than heroin. Nicotine is a drug that stimulates the brain after ten seconds of inhaling it through the smoke. 5. Gum diseases Saliva in the mouth is used to remove germs and bacteria. But smoke hinders with this, and the end result is gum diseases that occur in all smokers. Due to the cigarette heat, gums are affected and stains are made in the teeth and mouth. Also, bad breath and dry mouths are experienced due to smoking. 6. Oral cancers
Oral cancers are found in smokers because of the cancer causing substances in cigarettes. In this disease, gums, mouth and tongue are also affected. Almost 34,000 people are found to suffer from oral cancer every year due to their smoking habit. 7. Stomach ulcers Also called peptic ulcers, these diseases are caused more in smokers than non-smokers. They heal faster in non-smokers than smokers and increase again if you smoke. 8. Chronic Bowel disease This disease is also called Cronin’s disease and affects smokers more. 9. Throat cancer This disease is caused by cancer causing substances in smoke vapors getting stuck in the mucous membranes present in the throat. Around 80% of throat cancer is due to smoking. 10. Skin problems: Yellowish rashes on the hands and face are formed due to smoke. 11. Heart related diseases Even young smokers suffer from cardio diseases as smoke causes heart to beat faster than usual. Strain is put on the heart, as the smoke causes vessels and arteries to be constricted which in turn causes the blood pressure to increase eventually causing attacks. 12. Strokes Smokers are more likely to suffer from strokes than non-smokers to the difference of 250%. Strokes occur when a reduced amount of blood is sent to the brain as a result of blood vessel blockage called embolism or hemorrhages. Around 700,000 people suffer from strokes every year. In fact it is the third most cause of death of people in the USA. 13. Psoriasis In this disease, skin discolorations and disfigurations are usually found. They are usually red and silver rashes on the skin. Many people do not know these are due to smoking and they are twice as likely to have this disease if they smoke. 14. Skin aging Smoking causes skin to age and have a leathery appearance due to reduction in blood flow in the skin. These are even found amongst youngsters who smoke. 15.Blindness Smokers have a 50% chance of developing blindness through cataract formation in the eyes.
