Things You Should Know About HDL Cholesterol

American Heart Association has done a recent study which revealed that more than 50% of Americans alive today are suffering a high level of cholesterol which makes them prone to several heart diseases. Or in other words, this means that one out of two Americans is at a very high risk of heart disease as well as other related illnesses due to the high level of cholesterol in their blood.

You should remember that there are two kinds of cholesterol, namely HDL and LDL. HDL is needed for body and it helps to eradicate the bad cholesterol which is known as LDL. HDL or good cholesterol needs to be at a certain level in our body. This is accepted as being around 40mg/dl and if this amount goes down you will be at risk of heart disease.

The duty of HDL (high density lipoproteins) cholesterol is to carry the LDL or bad cholesterol away from the heart and the main arteries so that it can be filtered by the liver. HDL cholesterol removes LDL cholesterol from the plaque deposits in the arteries and also slows its deposition. Therefore, HDL cholesterol is called "good" cholesterol. Our body needs a good level of HDL cholesterol to help combat the negative effects LDL cholesterol has on our health.

As I mentioned earlier, the ideal level of HDL in our body is about 40 mg / dl. This number may vary slightly between men and women. But care should be taken to ensure that this level should not go beyond 60 mg / dl, because it will then lead to a bigger risk of heart disease.

HDL cholesterol level in blood is usually numbered around 3 to 1, because of that it is very essential to increase the level of HDL cholesterol as higher as possible so it can keep the level of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream minimum.

HDL cholesterol levels may be increased by following a low cholesterol diet. This simply means avoiding foods which are enriched with Trans fatty acids and saturated fats because this causes an increase in the undesirable levels of LDL cholesterol. It is also essential to implement exercise regularly because it will remove the LDL cholesterol from the body.

In a low-cholesterol diet, you should include foods like fish (not fried, but grilled), lean poultry without skin or vegetables and fresh fruits. The foods you should avoid are mainly processed foods and contain high saturated fatty acids, certain high-fat dairy products, fried or deep fried foods, fatty meats and egg yolks. This improves your health as a whole and will work to ensure that you have low LDL-cholesterol levels.
